Is There A Miracle Mattress For Back Pain?

There is no single back pain mattress brand or style that works for all people who suffer from back pain.  It all comes down to personal preference.  People with lumbar back pain should choose the mattress that meets their comfort and support standards, offers them relief at night and will allow them to attain a good nights rest.

Your mattress should provide both comfort and back support.  Sleeping on the wrong type of mattress can worsen, and even cause lower back pain.  A lack of support from your mattress strains muscles, reinforces poor sleeping posture and does not help keep your spine in alignment when you sleep.  A mattress that provides both comfort and back support will help to reduce lower back pain, and allow the structures in the spine to rest and rejuvenate during the night.

You should also understand the physical components and makeup of your mattress.  The inner springs, or coils of the mattress is what provides the support.  Every mattress is different in the number of coils they use and in the arrangement of those coils.  The padding on the top of the mattress also comes in many different thicknesses and they will vary from soft to firm.  Typically mattresses are offered in a range of 7 inches to 18 inches thick.  A good back pain mattress will provide support the natural curves and the proper alignment of your spine.  The right amount of back support will depend on the patients preference, but it should help to prevent any muscle soreness in the morning.  There needs to be a balance between over all comfort and great back support from your mattress.  Most research supports, that a medium-firm mattress will usually provide the best back support and relief for most people.  Your mattress should allow your shoulders and hips to slightly sink in, keeping the natural curve of the spine.  A firm mattress does not generally allow that to happen, and in turn causes stiffness and a sore back in the morning.

The best way to shop for a new mattress is to go and try them out for yourself at a store.  Lay on the different types of mattresses on your side for about 10 minutes each. Don’t bounce up and down on it like many people do.  If your back starts to hurt after that amount of time, it is definitely not the mattress for you.  Don’t rely on the store ratings of mattresses.  Each case and person has different needs, and their test groups may not have included those with back pain problems. You will need to spend quite a bit of time researching and testing many different mattresses in order to find the one that is right for you and your needs.
